bike lane in the desert

 April 27-28 - 100 km to Skoura, then 75 km to a rest day at Ait Ben Haddou.

This we never expected... smooth highway with a bike lane for many kilometers along this stretch of the journey...

More great scenery... I love the snow-capped mountain backdrop or the parched hot desert.
There are always more hills to climb. On one of the steeper ones as we climbed at single-digit speed on a rather narrow part of the road and limited forward visibility around a curve, a police vehicle came up and positioned himself just behind us and turned on his flashing lights until we got over the top.

Movie studios have used this area for movies such as Lawrence of Arabia.
Lots of beautiful pottery along the road - again, one has to feel for the effect of COVID on these businesses.
Our rest day is Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO world heritage site owing to its past as the 'mud city'
We get there after about 12 km of steady climbing that would have been okay except for the 40 km/hr wind that was right on the nose.
We were very glad to see the hotel

Back to Casablanca

Thursday May 12 - 2700 km of cycling behind us and we return to Casablanca where e started five weeks ago... The previous rest day was in Essaouira, a fishing port city built and fortified in its present form in the the 18th century. It was Morocco's major port through the 19th century.     We had to navigate the narrow alleys of the medina to get to the hotel - happily the support crews handled the baggage that had to come in on hand carts Reverse the process Tuesday morning, assemble outside the old city wall, pump up the tires, fill water bottles, and start the final three days of riding with a 120 km ride followed by two 70 km days. Some very bleak scenery at times, some fields of stone and some very parched-looking stretches but on the whole a reasonable amount of well-tended agricultural land. Chefchaouen - first rest day

April 15 - Good Friday,,, ...and a welcome first rest day after five days on the bikes. First task every day, including leaving Casablanca was getting the bags to the van before breakfast.  Then a group ride along the sea for the group photo, then past the Casablanca mosque, third largest in the world we're told.    Sunday morning - quiet in town, little traffic. The streets are unbelievably clean. The photo below is on the north side of Casablanca. Just around the bend in the photo below were immaculate lawns, playing fields, and playgrounds. It has been a tough 5 riding days. Tough on our bottoms not used to hours in the saddle, and tough just to get re-acclimatized to being on the bikes after hardly any riding during the winter. First day was 110 km north along the coast to Rabat. Years ago in the 50s, Canada had an RCAF station in Rabat supporting the air defense wings deployed to France and Germany when NATO formed.
